The Narita International Airport is one of two airports that serve the greater metropolitan area of Tokyo. It handles a significant number of Japan’s domestic and international flights, and is approximately 60 kilometres from downtown Tokyo.

Located in Chiba Prefecture, specifically in Narita City, the airport offers a number of transportation options going to central Tokyo.

Japan Rail

For Japan Rail Pass holders, there are two ways to travel from Narita Airport to Tokyo:

JR Narita Express – This is the best method of travel as it is fully covered by the JR Pass and other types of JR Passes, including the JR Tokyo Wide Area Pass. A train departs every 30 to 60 minutes and travel time is about an hour.

For non-JR Pass holders, the cost of a one-way ticket depends on the destination station:

  • Tokyo: 3,020 yen
  • Shinagawa/Shibuya/Shinjuku/Ikebukuro: 3,190 yen
  • Omiya: 3,840 yen
  • Yokohama: 4,290 yen

JR Sobu Line – This is a slower way to travel via Japan Rail. From the airport, it takes about an 90 minutes to get to Tokyo. A train departs every hour, and a one-way ticket costs 1,320 yen for non-JR Pass holders.

Keisei

There are two ways to travel from Narita Airport to Tokyo via the Keisei Line.

Keisei Skyliner – From the airport, take the Keisei Skyliner to Nippori Station and then transfer to either the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line or the JR Yamanote Line for Tokyo Station. One-way travel takes about 90 minutes and the fare is around 2,500 yen.

Keisei Limited Express – This is a slower but cheaper alternative to the Skyliner. It also requires a transfer at Nippori Station, with the one-way journey taking about an 90 minutes and costing 1,200 yen.

Bus

There are several bus companies that link Narita Airport and Tokyo.

Tokyo Shuttle – This bus service is an affordable transport option that costs either 1,000 yen (day time) or 2,000 yen (night time and early morning) for 90 minutes travel from the airport to Tokyo Station.

Access Narita – This service provides connections between the airport and Tokyo Station and Ginza Station. A one-way ticket costs 1,000 yen during the day and 2,000 yen at night.

Limousine Bus – This offers connections to many major hotels located in the Tokyo Station vicinity. Travel time is still around 90 minutes and a one-way ticket costs 3,100 yen.

Taxi

A taxi ride from Narita Airport to central Tokyo takes between 60 and 90 minutes, and may cost as much as 20,000 yen.
