Hokuriku Arch Pass:
The Hokuriku Arch Pass is a dedicated rail pass tailored for foreign tourists visiting Japan. It provides unrestricted access to JR trains, inclusive of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, enabling a smooth journey between Tokyo and Osaka via the less-explored Kanazawa/Hokuriku Region. This pass is a great economical alternative to the nationwide Japan Rail Pass and can get you up to Osaka with a side trip off the beaten track to explore the cultural richness of regional Japan.
Validity:
The Hokuriku Arch Pass grants unlimited access to JR trains traversing between Tokyo and Osaka via the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Additionally, the pass is valid on JR trains operating in central Tokyo and central Osaka, encompassing routes to Tokyo’s Narita Airport, Osaka’s Kansai Airport, and also the Tokyo Monorail route to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Within the designated zone, all categories of JR trains are accessible with this pass, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen (excluding the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen), limited express trains, and local trains.
A select few JR trains operate partially on tracks owned by different railway entities. When traveling on a segment not owned by JR, pass holders are required to pay the corresponding fare for that non-JR segment either on the train or at the station. The Hokuriku Arch Pass also extends to the following non-JR train lines:
- IR Ishikawa Railway between Kanazawa and Tsubata for connecting to the JR Nanao Line
- Ainokaze Toyama Railway between Toyama and Takaoka
- Tokyo Monorail between central Tokyo and Haneda Airport
Complimentary seat reservations are a feature of this pass, with the exception of Hayabusa and Komachi trains (between Tokyo and Omiya) where pass holders can only occupy non-reserved sections. Reservations can be secured at ticket offices or through ticket machines. It’s noteworthy that a cap of six reservations exists for those made at ticket machines, while reservations made at ticket offices have no such limitation.
The validity of the pass spans seven consecutive days. The pass operates on calendar days (from midnight to midnight) rather than 24-hour cycles.
Pass holders are entitled to an array of discounts and complimentary offerings within the pass coverage zone. Exclusively foreign visitors to Japan (holding a temporary visitor status) are eligible to utilize the Hokuriku Arch Pass. It is not available for use by Japan residents.
Points of Sale & Prices:
