Staying connected to the internet will not be a problem while in Japan. There are many avenues available for you to access reliable internet and wi-fi so you can keep in contact with family and friends, check your e-mails and more, even if you are on the road.

At Your Accommodation

Internet access is available in most hotels, hostels, inns and other types of accommodation in Japan. It is usually free of charge for 24-hour access. You can connect your laptop, tablet or smartphone by asking for the password once you check-in. Sometimes, there are computers available in the lobby for everyone’s use.

SIM Cards

Once you are in Japan, you can purchase a SIM card that will give you internet access using your phone. At airports, there are shops and vending machines where you can get one that is suitable for your connection and data needs. However, this service is only available to unlocked smartphones and tablets.

Portable Wi-Fi

If your device is unlocked, you can try renting a portable wi-fi hotspot. There are several companies that offer this service and they accept reservations and rental requests in advance via their websites. They will deliver the device to your hotel, home, one of their kiosks or a post office at the airport. Here are some pocket rental wi-fi services to check out:

Free Wi-Fi

Free wireless internet is slowly becoming more common all over Japan. At some airports, such as Narita Airport and Kansai Airport, you can connect to the public wi-fi at the arrival and departure areas free of charge. At major train stations, particularly those that serve Shinkansen Lines, free wi-fi is also available in the waiting area and tourist information centres. You can also access free wi-fi at certain coffee shops, restaurants, fast food places and convenience stores.

Paid Wi-Fi

Paid wi-fi hotspots are everywhere in Japan, but going through their registration process can be a bit difficult for non-Japanese speakers. Many of the companies require completion of registration forms that are usually in Japanese, and a Japanese address or credit card. Fortunately, there are a few that have English interfaces and accept international cards such as Wi2, docomo, Skype WiFi and Softbank.

Manga Kissa or Netto Café

Manga kissa or netto café are internet cafes where you can rent a computer with internet access. They are typically located close to major railway stations and charge about 1,500 to 2,000 yen per hour.
