When purchasing the Japan Rail Pass you will need to select between the following options:
- Class: Economy or Green
- Days: 7, 14, 21 day options
- Age group: Adult (12+ years) or child (6 – 11 years)
- Number of passes
Each of the options are straight forward and you will need to decide which one is right for you. You can find further information on the following types below:
Class type:
This option is based on the level of comfort you require and budget you have. For most passengers the economy class is fine, but if you are looking for a little more comfort, leg room and peace of mind, then green class is definitely worthwhile.
How many days:
This will depend on how long you plan on using the JR Network in Japan. If you are staying for 2 weeks, but plan to actively use the pass for 7 concurrent days, then just getting a 7 day pass would be fine. If you are travelling for 30 days, and will only be doing extensive travel at the start and at the end of the 30 days, then you could even get two separate 7 day passes.
Age group:
Persons over 12 years old will require an adult pass. Children between 6 and 11 years will require a child pass. If you have a child 5 years and under, you are not required to get them a pass. However they must not take up a seat if the train is busy. If you want them to have their own seat, then you will have to purchase them a child pass. The price of a child pass is 50% off an adult fare.
Number of passes:
You will need to decide the number of passes for your next trip. You can purchase multiple passes per person and can use them at different times if you are staying in Japan for awhile.
